Everyone loves an underdog story. Movies like the Karate Kid, Rocky and Cool Runnings have taught us that anyone can triumph over adversity.
At this year’s Australian University Games, the UniSA lawn bowls team will live out their very own Cool Runnings story.
A team of basketball players who failed to qualify decided to give lawn bowls a go.
Alex Hutchinson (21), Joshuah Jenner (21), Adam Versolato (22) and Anthony Del Medico (20) have traded the basketball singlets for the white slacks and polo shirts.
Studying Sports and Recreation Management, Alex Hutchinson is competing at his fourth AUG.
“I couldn’t bear to miss out on uni games and when the option to give lawn bowls a go I thought what have we got to lose,” said Alex.
“Most of us are a bunch of ‘scrubbers’ but I’m still hoping for a medal.”
Just as the world got behind the Jamaican Bobsled Team in the 1988 Winter Olympics, it’s time to get excited and support our UniSA lawn bowlers.
There will be 43 universities around Australia competing in Adelaide from September 23, so come support our UniSA representatives.
