Verse Magazine is back for 2020 – the turn of another decade and the start of an exciting new year. Meet the five funky writers, question askers, designers, dreamers, mouse clickers, and social media junkies who are donating their blood, sweat and tears to Verse Magazine in 2020…
Hello! I’m Anna and I’m Head Editor
Can you tell everyone what are you studying and what you hope to gain from it?
I’m studying a double bachelor degree in Journalism and Professional Writing, and Communication and Media. When I started this degree in 2017, I had no idea where it would take me, and I certainly didn’t have any inkling that it would lead to the Head Editor position at Verse! Now that I’m three-quarters of the way through, I think the biggest thing I’ve gained is an appreciation for how well-written stories can spark new ideas, change minds, and transform attitudes. Looking to the future, and when I think about my HECS debt (cue clammy hands), the biggest thing I’d like to gain is definitely a job.
What is your favourite publication?
I’ll read anything I can get my hands on, but some of my favourite publications (both online and IRL) are The Guardian, The Good Weekend, The Adelaide Review, CityMag, Vice, Refinery29, Junkee, and of course Verse!
An interesting fact about you is…
While I can’t make any promises on whether it’s a fun fact, in the last few years I’ve become addicted to Sudoku. I have an app on my phone and I’m a bit obsessed with beating my fastest time that I fluked on a bus ride once.
Hi! I’m Leah and I’m one of two Graphic Designers
Can you tell everyone what are you studying and what you hope to gain from it?
I’m studying a Bachelor of Communication Design and I hope to gain the skills & knowledge to work as a designer. I feel my strengths, skills and areas of interest are still developing so who knows where I will end up, hopefully with a job of some sort!
What is your favourite publication?
Frankie for all the beautiful things & Dumbo Feather for times of deeper thinking.
An interesting fact about you is…
I have a titanium hip!
Hi! I’m Emma and I’m the other Graphic Designer
Can you tell everyone what are you studying and what you hope to gain from it?
I’m currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Communication Design program at UniSA. Initially, I had hoped to complete this degree and find work as a graphic or communication designer. As I have progressed through the course, though, I have become fascinated with design theory – particularly rhetoric, design as social control and design as politics. My aim is to use this degree as a springboard to commence postgraduate study at UniSA next year.
What is your favourite publication?
I know I’m supposed to say something trendy and designerly but I’m a bit of a nerd, so I mostly find myself reading The Guardian, New Scientist and New Philosopher.
An interesting fact about you is…
An interesting fact about me… I was a test tube baby, is that interesting?
Hello, hello! I’m Nina and I’m one part of the Comms & Digital Editor duo
Can you tell everyone what are you studying and what you hope to gain from it?
I’m studying a double degree in Journalism and English Literature. Entering into my fourth and final year of university, you’d think I’d know what I want to gain from this degree. A creative writing study tour and a semester abroad later and I think I am closer to running away to Canada than I am pursuing a career in Journalism. However, if there’s one thing university has taught me it’s that no matter where you are or what you’re doing, you never stop learning and everyone’s got a story to tell.
What is your favourite publication?
Look, I read a lot of different publications… But, The Betoota Advocate is my primary source of all hard news.
An interesting fact about you is…
Why do all interesting facts sound like subtle flexes? Anyhoo… I worked at Bakers Delight for four years and now I’m a celiac.
Hi! I’m Jordan and I’m the other Comms and Digital Editor
Can you tell everyone what are you studying and what you hope to gain from it?
I’m studying a Bachelor of Journalism with a sub-major in History and Global Politics. I chose journalism because it can help make the world a better place, and for my love for words. An ABC or SBS cadetship would be amazing but one can dream, right?
What is your favourite publication?
The Economist for the hard stuff, and World Press Photo annuals for an eye-opening perspective of all the amazing, beautiful, and horrific things in the world.
An interesting fact about you is…
When I was about fifteen, I walked 40 kilometres or so with some mates for no apparent reason. It took 8 hours and felt like death. We went from Cobblers Creek, through Sampson Flat and One Tree Hill, all the way to Gawler. We used to talk about walking to Mildura, too. Thank goodness that didn’t happen.
