Hold your breath… make a wish… count to three… and welcome to Verse’s curated world of pure imagination for 2021!
Firstly, we at Verse are so appreciative you have picked up our little ol’ magazine to read on that beautiful day you are having. Secondly, I hope this parade of escapism we have mocked up for you provides a healthy dose of entertainment and information. Thirdly, fuck 2020. Am I right?
As you may have seen, in the lead up to Edition 38, we asked the question, ‘how did you escape 2020?’, as a basis to build content for the magazine. The thing is, sometimes life is full of boredom, danger and drama; perfectly depicted in the calamity of last year. The peculiar thing is that, all through time, human beings have produced this remarkable ability to avert the harshness of reality through the act of escapism. As an example, in Alice in Wonderland, Alice fell into Wonderland to escape boredom; in The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy got whisked away to Oz to escape danger; and, in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie travelled to the Chocolate Factory to escape family drama. It is the very act of escapism that we attempted to catch in a bottle for this edition.
We wanted to find your Wonderland, your Oz, your Chocolate Factory and display it as a means to counteract the effects of 2020… and, trust me, none of you disappointed. From flights to the clouds, dives to the deep blue, journeys to hidden worlds and explorations of dark twisted, but beautiful, fantasies, I think we have found the perfect remedy for the gruelling challenges of last year.
So, without further ado, take my hand. Let us leap down the rabbit hole, stroll the yellow brick road and use this letter as our very own Golden Ticket to 2021. DO NOT turn back at the messes of last year. Just come with me – come with us – and you will be in a world of pure imagination…
