I used to read a lot. I would regularly visit the library and come home with a 10-stack of books that would be swiftly devoured. It was when I started high school that I found cooler things to do and inevitably my reading subsided. I still maintained some light reading in the form of magazines but the days of reading novels were over. That was until I came across a book which eased me back into my favourite pastime.
Nylon Pretty: The Nylon Book of Beauty combines my two favourite things: words and pretty things. The book talks about the evolution of beauty, being inspired by the past and celebrating individualism. Iconic products such as Chanel lipstick, Maybelline Great Lash mascara and YSL Touche Eclat are all mused over as well as a selection of perfumes that are reminiscent of the past century. There is inspiration from the vintage, retro and modern eras; think Jean Harlow, Sophia Loren and Gwen Stefani, all of which are accompanied with stunning photography. To expand your make-up repertoire there are looks from leading make-up artists to try your hand at. Finally, there is an entire section devoted to hair styles that have had an influence over the fashion industry. As the book so eloquently states, it’s ‘all very Nylon and very, well, pretty.’
If you’re a fan of Nylon magazine, are obsessed with cosmetics and fashion, and admire the work of amazing photographers and illustrators you need to get your hands on a copy of Nylon Pretty: The Nylon Book of Beauty.
