Lo-fi is the refuge of bored teenagers with the Sonic Youth discography and an ounce of weed. It has spawned many bastard-child subgenres and brooding incarnations in the past decade. It’s most recent, No Joy, splices all elements of noise rock, lo-fi and punk to create a post-naughties take on the sound that became synonymous with the 90s. By removing all the monotony out of the genre but maintaining an aesthetic, No Joy have created one of the best albums of 2011.
