As a fan myself, I had high hopes and certain expectations as to what this album would sound like. I could not have been more wrong. The album is full of surprises. Every track brings a new sound. It was difficult to say whether ‘I like it’ or ‘loathe it’. It is very different to what us ‘monsters’ have come to expect from Lady Gaga.
Upon first listen to the album, I was shocked and didn’t know how to handle the new Gaga sound. It is very diverse; each song brings a new genre to the listener from an 80s vibe, to opera inspired and even hints of heavy metal.
There is a mixture of themes that intertwine with the music and the lyrics that are quite ‘in your face’. I find that the album is very religious, with overt references. An example of this is track 9’s chorus line “Jesus is the new black…Amen Fashion” with direct reference to both religion and fashion.
This third instalment in the ‘Gaga’ series contains a mixture of languages, which appeals cleverly and directly to her huge European fan base. Also, us Aussies enjoy these lyrics because they are both exotic and mysterious.
Besides the title track from the album ‘Born This Way’, my personal favourite is ‘Scheiße’. Most of the song is in German, so I don’t really know what it is about but the beat and overall sound of the song makes this little monster want to ‘Just Dance’.
If your daring and think that you are up to it, go ahead buy the album, but don’t just listen to it once. Give it a few listens to ease you into it, and then make your decision. I have grown to like it. But I must admit I am more of an ‘old school’ Gaga fan.
