There are many of us that when faced by obstacles, give up and move on to easier things. But then there are those special few – which face the obstacles others find too hard – head on. Giving up is an easy thing to do, but to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that’s true strength. These are the people we often admire for their courage and determination.
On June 26, 2010, Charles Brice, a 19-year-old young man, originally from Naracoorte in the state’s South East, had a motorbike accident. Due to the accident he suffered severe spinal cord damage and now faces new challenges each day.
It is often the case that when we least expect it, our true strength really shines through, and Charles’ certainly has. He will face challenges through rehabilitation, and regaining some independence in life, and his family and friends will be behind him the whole way.
After Charles’ accident, many people wanted to know how Charles was going and how he was progressing. His family started the Facebook group, Bricey, Be Strong! so that his family and friends could be updated on exactly how he was doing. The Facebook group has now reached 1,630 members, and doesn’t look like stopping.
The Facebook page also allows his family and friends to write messages of love and support; and the amount of amazing messages on the page is an excellent indication of just how special, important and popular Charles is. However you may know him; Charles, Bricey, Chuck, or Buddy; he is a very special bloke. His personality was certainly not damaged by the accident, and he continues to be strong and determined to make the most of his opportunities.
For many people the Bricey, Be Strong! Facebook page became a part of their daily routine to check in and leave their messages of support. However, the page has now turned into something much bigger.
On July 30 briceybestrong.com was launched. The site will not only raise funds to support Charles’ rehabilitation, but it also allows people to show Charles how much they love him by purchasing t-shirts, wrist bands, bumper stickers, and temporary tattoos. Not only is it helping Charles through the Charles Brice Trust Fund, but it also shows the significance of friendship that many people hold with this young man.
People are also posting photos on the Facebook page showing their support by holding signs, displaying it on their foreheads, writing in the snow, and many other places, the phrase Bricey, Be Strong! It has become a little like the travelling garden gnome. Once the t-shirts are received by their recipients, there is also a bit of a competition to see who can have a photograph in the most original, funny or obscure location; anything to show Bricey how much he is loved, admired and thought of by countless people.
Charles is truly loved and admired for his strength of character, as well as his will and determination, and is definitely someone that many people look up to. In the words of Christopher Reeve, “a hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles”.
