If you read my other article in this edition of UniLife Magazine you may be wondering how the hell I managed to organise my international internship in just two weeks on my own. The answer to that is I didn’t.
Dream Careers was the answer to my search, my Google search that is.
Dream Careers is an internship program that can connect you with the career you have fantasised about all of your life while providing you with the tools to succeed.
Whatever your passion they can get you into the workplace in areas such as advertising, event planning, fashion, film, finance, hospitality and tourism, marketing, television, photography, radio, real estate, and the list goes on.
All you need to do is go to their website, www.SummerInternships.com, and apply.
The costs are around $7,000, but don’t worry there are several options for payment.
This cost goes toward your accommodation, all meals, travel to and from work and weekend activities (For me this included a trip to Paris). So when you break it down it is actually a pretty good deal.
Once that’s settled you will receive a phone call from someone that sounds a bit like the Richard Reid from the Today show – they’re your Internship Coordinator. The call will probably come in fairly early as Americans still can’t work out that little thing we like to call time difference. After the initial shock of the 4 am wakeup call the conversation is a cheery surprise. You will soon learn that the staff at Dream Careers are almost more passionate about finding you your dream career than you are.
Your Internship Coordinator will help you to refine your resume in preparation for the next step which is securing the internship. They will help you to decide which companies you will send your resume to and then help to set up an over the phone interview between you and your possible employer.
If this all goes according to plan the next step will be your VISA which can seem like a bit of a hassle, although a day trip to Melbourne is not all bad now is it. Ladies, I’m mostly talking to you.
Once you do arrive in your host city, you can expect the very best student accommodation with excellent facilities. This is where you will join a group of around 80 other students on your program, depending on where you choose to go.
As well as being a great way to fast track your career it is also a great way to make lasting friendships with people from all around the world. When you are standing with your luggage on the last day of the program with tears streaming down your face you will understand what I mean. The friends you make here are for life.
This is the point where I could say if you think this is for you apply, but that’s crap. Of course this is for you!
Everyone wants their dreams to come true and now could be your time.
Sound good? Apply now for 2011 June-July Summer Internships!
