Button up your shirt and roll your jeans to your ankles. Dressing like a nerd is cool. Very cool. I’m not suggesting you pull your pants to your waist. No, not at all. By ‘nerd dressing’ I mean collared shirts, bow ties and sweater vests. Dressing like a nerd is so cool that celebrities such as Ryan Gosling, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and One Direction’s Zayn Malik are doing it.
The look is becoming so popular in the fashion world that it comes as no surprise that more and more people are purposely dressing like nerds too. Many are going as far as completing their look with nonprescription nerd glasses. These spiffy specs can really spice up your look or add that extra touch to an outfit. The four-eyed fashion trend has fast become a style staple. Other big names like David Beckham has been spotted in a pair of heavy framed eye-wear, while Victoria Beckham included a pair of nerd glasses in a collection of frames she designed recently. Anyone who is anyone can wear nerd glasses, but the idea is to wear them well.
Like any pair of glasses, nerd glasses come in different shapes, colours and sizes. Try on as many as you like; search high and low for that perfect pair. Vintage, retro or modern, any of these will work.
Bright, solid colours tend to be a popular choice, as well as patterned frames.
Unleash your inner nerd by following these tips.
Consistency is key
One of the most efficient ways to pull off your nerd look is to make it a signature part of your style. Therefore, you’ll need to wear your nerd glasses often. You’ll need to make them an element of your overall style.
Dress the part
If you don’t want to include your nerd glasses into your everyday look, then you should incorporate them well with your outfit. Remember, nerd glasses look best with nerd outfits – or perhaps contrasted against another distinctive style. So, team your nerd glasses with buttoned up shirts, high neck jumpers, bold coloured blazers or patterned t-shirts.
For the geek gals
When you wear your nerd glasses, stick to the rule that less is more when applying your make-up. Dramatic eye make-up only works with rimless glasses. So if you’re wearing thick-rimmed glasses, keep your make-up simple. Thick eyebrows also complement the look. If you’re game, add some pencil to your eyebrows to create fullness.
Cropped hairstyles work well, but if your hair is long, pull it away from your face to fully embrace the geek chic look. Try a side ponytail or messy bun.
If you are feeling adventurous, the cat-eye frame with a bright coloured rim is very high fashion. Wear cat-eye glasses with a pretty blouse and high waist skirt. Doing so will give you that sexy-office-girl look. Reow.
Nerd glasses go well with anything high waist: high waist jeans, shorts and skirts. This is the perfect combination.
With a layer (or two) of lipstick, your hair pinned to the side and a cute bag bouncing on your back, you my friend will be the ultimate ‘cool nerd.’
For the nerd guys
For men, one of the most popular styles is Ray-Ban Wayfarer-style glasses. These frames are fun and flattering. They are versatile and can be worn with many different outfits. This type of frame is bold and black and will suit almost anyone.
Whichever style of nerd glasses your choose, whether it is Clark Kent-style or half-frame nerd glasses, a great way to wear them is with buttoned up shirts, V-neck t-shirts, striped jumpers, jeans and jackets. Nerd glasses also go well with a dressy shirt, vest and tie or bow tie.
Don’t be afraid to mess your hair and grow some facial hair. This rugged look will give you that extra edge. And while you’re at it, partner your nerd glasses with a beanie or scarf this winter. Men can accessorise too.
Feeling nerd-spired? Grab a pair of glasses and show off your inner nerd. Wear the brightest pair, or the largest pair. Go crazy with it. Go wild. Have fun. Heck, go all the way and wear your socks high and your trousers higher. No, I’m kidding. Don’t do that. Now you’re just taking it too far…
